Terrigal – How to live like a local

If you’re looking for an idyllic town with a stunning coastal setting and impossibly romantic sunsets, look no further than Terrigal. Situated on the central coast of New South Wales less than an hour and a half from Sydney by car, Terrigal provides a great setting for a fun family holiday or a romantic getaway for two. One of the best ways to enjoy quaint Terrigal is to visit the places locals hold dear to their hearts. Here are some local favourites you mustn’t miss when you’re in town.

The Skillion

One of Terrigal’s most recognisable natural landmarks and also one of its most beautiful, visiting the Skillion is absolutely mandatory for all visitors. A dramatic promontory made of sedimentary rock that provides amazing views of the entire town and its surroundings, the Skillion is where dreams are made and secrets are told. The lookout at the peak is popular not only with visitors but also with locals, and offers unparalleled views.

Terrigal Beach

Forget Bondi Beach. Terrigal Beach is one of New South Wales’s best-kept secrets and a favourite of locals. Swimming in the ocean is possible all year round, and at one end there is a little rock pool to splash around in. Terrigal Haven also features a harbour from which scuba divers and snorkelers arrive and depart. Take a surf lesson or enjoy a picnic on the beach.

Avoca Beach Picture Theatre

Going to the movies is an entirely different experience at the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre. The independent cinema was built in 1951 and has a beautiful location by Avoca Beach. It is routinely voted Australia’s best independent regional cinema. Other than the usual blockbusters, the theatre features many independent and art house films and also screens live events such as operas and plays. Instead of hitting up a bar or club at night, let a visit to the picture theatre turn a classic evening activity into an unforgettable experience.

Somersby Falls Picnic area

Australia’s amazing and varied natural landscapes are legendary, and Somersby Falls with its stunning rainforest site is not to be missed. One of the most popular rest stops on the central coast, the picnic area enables you to lounge on the grass swathed in a luxuriant rainforest setting. Look out for local wildlife such as bush turkeys. After a sumptuous barbecue lunch, follow the walking trails to the top of the waterfalls.

Dining options

Terrigal’s stunning ocean views are perfectly matched with intimate bars, cafes and restaurants. Trojan HQ Café and Bar offers incredible views of The Skillion and the vast ocean, and is the perfect spot for a cup of coffee from Tuesdays to Sundays. It’s also a great place to have breakfast after a walk up to the Skillion. Reef Restaurant is blessed with a stunning coastal location and offers a delicious menu featuring an abundance of fresh local produce.

Accommodation options

Terrigal’s charm undoubtedly stems from its coastal location, so staying at a hotel by the beach will ensure you’re always close to where the action is. Crowne Plaza Terrigal is not only equipped with facilities that can accommodate groups, couples and families but also boasts a charming beachside location that provides a great resort experience. Best of all, it’s just a stone’s throw from all the main attractions in central Terrigal.
